From Proto-Polynesian *kofa-ŋa (nest), from *kofa (from Proto-Oceanic *kopa) plus nominalizing suffix From *-ŋa.

Cognate with Hawaiian ʻohana (family, relatives, kin), Rarotongan koʻanga (nest), Samoan ōfaga (nest), Tahitian ofaaraa (nest).
