From Proto-Germanic *kairijaną, *kaurijaną (“to turn, sweep”), from Proto-Indo-European *gers- (“to twist, bend, turn”).

Cognate with Old Frisian kēra, Old Dutch kēren, Old High German kēren (“to turn, direct”). Possibly also related to Old Norse keyra (“to drive, set in motion”).
