Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic мѫдръ (mǫdrŭ, wise), from Proto-Slavic *mǫdrъ, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *mondʰh₁ros, from *mendʰh₁- +‎ *-rós. Compare Polish mądry, Russian мудрый (mudryj).
