Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *mët'ëldak, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *metaną, compare Dutch meten. Cognate to Votic mõtõlla and Livonian mõtlõ.

Verb

mõtlema (da-infinitive mõtelda or mõelda)

  1. to think
    Mõtlen, järelikult olen.
    I think, therefore I am.
  2. to mean, to intend, to plan to
    Ma ei mõelnud sind lüüa.
    I didn't intend to hit you.

Conjugation

There are two possible forms for the weak grade, either the -t- is dropped or preserved.
