From Sanskrit महर्द्धिक (maharddhika, prosperous). Cognate of Javanese ꦩꦂꦢꦶꦏ (mardika), Buginese ᨆᨑᨙᨉᨀ (maradeka), Tagalog maharlika. Doublet of merdeka.
