Maltese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Probably from underlying *mal-ajr (with the air), the latter word being a variant of arja that goes back to Sicilian airu (alongside aira, aria), from Latin aer (air). Aquilina’s suggestion to derive it from Arabic مُلامِل (mulāmil, quick, swift, of a mount) seems less likely.
