Inherited from Old French massüe, maçüe, earlier maçug(u)e, from Vulgar Latin *matteūca, extended from Vulgar Latin *mattia, *mattea whence masse, vulgarized from Latin mateola. Compare Romanian măciucă and Occitan maçuga.
