From Proto-Tai *ɓɯnᴬ (sky; heaven). Cognate with Thai บน (bon), Northern Thai ᨷᩫ᩠ᨶ, Lao ບົນ (bon), ᦥᦳᧃ (bun) or ᦢᦳᧃ (ḃun), Shan ဝူၼ် (wǔun) or မူၼ် (mǔun), Bouyei mbenl, Saek บึ๋น, Tày bôn.
