From *neme / *nämä "what", from Proto-Turkic *nē- (what). -me is an interrogative formant.

Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (nemä, something), Kyrgyz неме (neme, something) and эмне (emne, what?), Bashkir нимә (nimə, what?), Uzbek nima, Uyghur نېمە (nëme, what?), Khakas ниме (nime, what?), etc.
