Alteration of earlier *niechludźny, from nie- +‎ chludzić (to clean thoroughly, to have high standards of cleanliness) +‎ -ny.

Related to Russian холя (xolja, care, attention), холуй (xoluj, obsequious overattentive servant), Silesian kludzić, and also Polish schludny (neat, tidy), from schludzić.
