oldstyle (plural oldstyles)

1. (typography, often attributive) A traditional style of typeface designed to mimic the handwriting of scribes.
   • 2005, Pete Masterson, Book Design and Production: A Guide for Authors and Publishers:

     Books aimed at older and possibly vision impaired readers may have more difficulty with the generally lighter appearing transitional typefaces than they might with an oldstyle typeface.

   • 2014, Timothy Samara, Design Elements, 2nd Edition:

     A sentence set in an oldstyle serif and a similar-weight sans serif at the same point size will appear to be two different sizes.
