Etymology[edit]
Alteration, probably under influence of Gaulish ordiga (“toe(?)”) cf. Old Irish orddu lamae (“thumb”), of arteil, from Old French arteil, from Latin articulus. Compare Spanish artejo. Doublet of article, a learned borrowing.
