Etymology

A derivative of përball (to face, to defy), from për- +‎ ballë (forehead). Structurally and semantically comparable with Proto-Germanic *balþaz (to be bold) (cf. Old Norse ballr (hard, stubborn)), a derivative of Proto-Indo-European *bʰelH (white, shining).
