[edit]From *dalom (“needle”) + pa- -an. Fossilized word *dalom possibly came from Malay jarum, ultimately from Proto-Austronesian *zaʀum (“needle”) (cf. karayom and Cebuano dagom). Cognate to Kapampangan paraluman, Maranao padoman, Tausug padduman, and Malay pedoman (“compass”). Doublet of karayom.
