Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *peta (to be ruptured), from Proto-Indo-European *peth₂- (to spread out; to fly), related to Greek πετάννυμι (petánnymi, to widen), Latin pateō (to be open).[1] Possibly also connected to shpëtoj (to save), although unlikely.
