Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *wrīpa. Compare Ancient Greek ῥάπτω (rháptō, to sew together, to stitch), Lithuanian verpti (to spin). Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *reipa, to be connected with Proto-Germanic *raipaz (rope), in Old High German reif (rope, cord), Middle Low German rēp (sling, rope), Old Norse reipa (to fasten with a rope), and ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *roypnós. Also ultimately a doublet of repë through this theory.
