Compound of sekolah (school) +‎ rakyat (people), from calque from Japanese 國民學校(こくみんがっこう) (kokumingakkō, literally people school), from calque of German Volksschule (primary school, literally people-school). Cognate of Korean 국민학교 (gungminhakgyo).
