From Proto-Balto-Slavic *sādas (garden), or otherwise borrowed from Proto-Slavic *sȃdъ (plant, garden). Related to Latvian sàds (garden, orchard), Lithuanian sodìnti (to set, to plant); see the latter for more.[1]
