Swedish

Etymology

[edit]

From Old Swedish spridha, probably the same word as spredha, from Middle Low German sprēden, spreiden, from Proto-Germanic *spraidijaną (to spread). Cognate with English spread and German spreiten. Due to the absence of this word in Old Icelandic, the Swedish word as well as Danish sprede, Norwegian Bokmål spre, and Norwegian Nynorsk spreie are probably borrowed from Low German.
