Etymology

18th century, from Low German verduttet, participle of Middle Low German vordutten (to confuse, madden). Cognate with Icelandic dotta (to nod off). The form with -tz- may be a mechanical adaptation to the Standard German consonantism or alternatively a derivation with the intensive suffix -sen.
