Inherited from Old Polish wieprz, from Proto-Slavic *veprь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *weprios. Cognate with Lower Sorbian wjapś, Upper Sorbian wjapř, Czech vepř, Russian вепрь (veprʹ), Old Church Slavonic вепрь (veprĭ).
