Ancient Greek

Etymology

An -ία (-ía) derivation of Αἰθίοψ (Aithíops), of disputed origin (see the article).

Pronunciation

Proper noun

Αἰθιοπίᾱ (Aithiopíāf (genitive Αἰθιοπίᾱς); first declension

  1. Ethiopia

Usage notes

Herodotus' Αἰθιοπία is the "land of black people", corresponding to the known parts of Africa east of the Nile, i.e. the Horn of Africa and eastern Sudan. In the Septuagint, Αἰθιοπία translates Biblical Hebrew כּוּשׁ (kûš), the Biblical term for "black Africa".
