Etymology

Traditionally connected with σμύρις (smúris, emery powder) and with words for 'grease, fat', like Proto-Germanic *smerwą (grease), which would fit the eel as a fat creature. However, this does not explain the long "ῡ". According to Beekes, names of fish are often Lua error in Module:parameters at line 331: Parameter 2 should be a valid language, etymology language or family code; the value "pregrc" is not valid. See WT:LOL, WT:LOL/E and WT:LOF. and the suffix -αινᾰ (-aina) is well-known in such words.
