Ancient Greek

Etymology

From ψάλλω (psállō, to touch sharply, to pluck, to pull, to twitch) +‎ -τήριον (-tḗrion), from ψάω (psáō, to touch lightly, to rub), which acquired the meaning of plucking a harp, and later making music in general.
