Etymology

Perhaps adapted from Russian маленький (malenʹkij, small). Alternatively, evolved from Proto-Turkic *bāla (child), with an diminutive affix -käy.

Cognate with Tatar бәләкәй (bäläkäy, small), Kyrgyz белекей (belekey, low, short), compare also Chulym пӓлӓ (small).
