Etymology

Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish (Turkish maşallah), from Arabic مَا شَاءَ ٱللَّه (mā šāʔa l-lah, God has willed it).

Interjection

машала (mašala)

  1. (colloquial) To express admiration, praise.
  2. (colloquial) Used against the evil eye. (folk chant)
    Пу, пу, машала!Pu, pu, mašala!Pu, pu, mashallah!
