u-type and m-type reduplication of *աղտ- (*ałt-, dark), whose origin is unknown. Hardly related to *աղջ- (*ałǰ-). See also աղջամուղջ (ałǰamułǰ), բուզաղթն (buzałtʻn), *մուղտ- (*mułt-).
