Etymology

The second component is *կուր (*kur), *կրայ (*kray, shell), found in կրայակիր (krayakir, kind of mollusc), կրայ (kray, tortoise). The first component is either գաղտ (gałt, hidden, secret) or is etymologically related to գլտորել (gltorel, to roll), thus “shell-fish with a spiral shell”.
