Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Martirosyan suggests derivation from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *pelḱ-sk- or *pelḱs with Old English felg (English felloe) as a cognate. Alternatively, connected with խեց (xecʻ, pot; shell (of molluscs, etc.)), if the basic meaning of the latter was ‘turning, twisting’.
