Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *olbʰ-, grown from the onomatopoeic root *ol-, *el-, whence possibly also աղաչեմ (ałačʻem), աղաւթք (aławtʻkʻ), աղատեմ (ałatem), աղատ (aġat), աղմուկ (ałmuk). Cognate with Lithuanian ulbauti (to warble) and Ancient Greek ὀλοφύρομαι (olophúromai, to lament). Further cognate with Lithuanian nu-aldė́ti (to sound), Old Norse jálmr (noise), (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Saterland Frisian ulken (to cry, to mock), (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Swedish alken (to begin to growl), (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek ὀλολύζω (ololúzō, to cry out loudly, call, moan), ἔλεγος (élegos).
