From the root ז־ב־ב , from Proto-Semitic *ḏbb, from Proto-Afroasiatic *ðuṗṗ. Cognate with Arabic ذُبَابٌ (ḏubābun), Akkadian 𒉏 (zumbu, zubbu, dubbum) and ultimately Coptic ⲁϥ (af).
