Related to Akkadian 𒋗𒈨𒊒 (/⁠šumeru⁠/, “Sumer”), Egyptian sngr (“Babylonia”), Hittite 𒋗𒈨𒊒 (/⁠šanhar(a)⁠/), all likely ultimately from Sumerian 𒌦𒊕𒈪𒂵 (ùĝ saĝ gíg-ga, “Sumerians”, literally “black-headed people”) or 𒆠𒂗𒂠 (ki-en-ĝir, “Sumer”, literally “place of the noble lords”).

     wattəhī rēšīṯ mamlaḵtō bāḇel wəʾéreḵ wəʾakkaḏ wəḵalnē bəʾéreṣ šinʿār.

     And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.
