Etymology

An unclassical word, apparently applying the vulgar tool pattern فَاعُول (fāʕūl) to Ancient Greek χαλινός (khalinós, bit; thong; part of the tackle of a ship; anything that restrains from the outer). Also passed into Classical Syriac ܟܠܴܢܳܐ (klānā, bar or bolt for fastening doors, sera).
