From Proto-Karen *thwiᴮ (dog), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *d-kʷəj-n (dog). Cognate with Pa'o Karen ထွီႏ, S'gaw Karen ထွံၣ် (hṭweè), Western Pwo ထွံၪ.
