Etymology

Attested as Santa Ougea de Esere in 1384. From a local Indo-European substrate language, from the old name of the river Xallas, documented in local Latin medieval documents as Esar; from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ish₂-ró-s,[1][2] from Proto-Indo-European *h₁eysh₂- (to strengthen, propel). Cognate with German Isar, among other European river names.
