Etymology

Formation like ἀηδώ (aēdṓ) and τυτώ (tutṓ). Probably onomatopoeic like πιππίζω (pippízō, to pipe, chirp) and Sanskrit पिप्पका (pippakā, kind of bird). Compare also πῖπος (pîpos, young piping bird).
