Etymology

From शक (śaka, Scythians, Sacae, Saka) +‎ मुरुण्ड (muruṇḍa), from a Proto-Saka name *Sakā mravantaʰ (literally Saka lords).

Equivalent in meaning to but not cognates with Ancient Greek Σακαραῦκαι (Sakaraûkai) and Middle Chinese 塞旺 (MC sojH|sok hjwangH).
