From Old Danish tryde, from Old Norse þrjóta, from Proto-Germanic *þreutaną (to harass), cognate with Norwegian Nynorsk tryta (archaic), Swedish tryta, German verdrießen. The Danish form with the prefix is influenced by Middle Low German vordrēten.
