[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *smáyatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *smáyatay, from Proto-Indo-European *smey- (“to laugh, to be glad”). Cognate with Latin cōmis, Proto-Germanic *smīlijaną (whence English smile), Russian смеяться (smejatʹsja) .
