Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *plútas, from Proto-Indo-European *plutós, from *plew- (to flow). Equivalent[1] to the 0-grade of pre-Slavic *pelti (to fold, to flow) +‎ *-ъtъ. Cognate with Latvian pluts (raft, ferry) (possibly a borrowing from Slavic). Further akin to Ancient Greek πλυτός (plutós, washed), Sanskrit प्लुत (pluta, flowing, washing), German Fluss (river, flow).
