From Proto-Hellenic *témenos, from Proto-Indo-European *témh₁nos, from *temh₁- (“to cut”); whence τέμνω (témnō, “I cut”). Cognate with Mycenaean Greek 𐀳𐀕𐀜 (te-me-no).
