From Proto-Indo-European *dŕ̥tis, equivalent to *teraną +‎ *-þiz. Cognate with Ancient Greek δάρσις (dársis, separation, tearing), Sanskrit दृति (dṛ́ti, skin, bag) (< masculine), Russian дерть (dertʹ, cleared land).
