From a substrate language, from a hydronym *Awya, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewh₁- (run).[1] Compare Welsh awel (wind), from Proto-Celtic *awelā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewh₁eleh₂.
