In words with penultimate stress that end in a vowel, we find the same near-complementary distribution as in disyllabic words. Words ending in /e/ usually have accent 2. But exceptions are more common here: words with /ns/, /j/ or /ʂ/ preceding the final /e/ seem to have accent 1 in most cases. Examples are [fɑ.¹jɑn.sə], fajanse ‘faience’, [bɑ.¹tɑl.jə] batalje ‘fight’ (but [ʋɑ.²nil.jə], vanilje ‘vanilla’) and [kɑ.¹lɔʂ.ʂə], kalosje ‘galosh’.

Traditionally, the Hamont dialect is classified amongst the Limburg dialects with a lexical tone contrast. This lexical tone distinction can signal either lexical differences or grammatical distinctions such as those between the singular and the plural forms of certain nouns. Typical examples of the former are words like [ɦuːs²] 'house' vs. [ɦus¹] '(record) sleeve'.
