Title
Hoard of late Roman coins in a pottery vessel
Description
English: A pottery vessel containing silver Roman coins. The coins were all tightly packed within the vessel, a small flagon, and were not removed at the time of discovery. They were later taken to the British Museum for removal from the vessel and cleaning in the conservation laboratory before identification and cataloguing.

Description of Find:
In total, 662 coins were discovered, all late Roman silver coins of the denominations known as miliarenses (of which there were 9) and siliquae (of which there were 653). The earliest coins present were those of the emperor Constantius II minted in 355-361 AD. The latest coins were those of the emperors Arcadius and Honorius minted in Milan between 395 and 402 AD. The composition of the group is fairly typical for hoards of this date, and it is likely that the coins circulated together before deposition in the early fifth century.

The British Museum acquired one of the coins in hoard, below:

The rest of the coins were returned to the finder.

Associated Pottery:
The vessel is described by the Finds Liaison Officer Ms C. Hayward Trevarthen as a globular, necked flagon with a small strap handle on the neck. It is possibly slip coated. The fabric is yellow brown to dark grey with abundant fine sand temper. It was identified by Dr. James Gerrard as being of Late Roman date.

Age and metal-content:
The coins and ceramic vessel are certainly over three hundred years old and thus meet the requirements of the Treasure Act in this respect. Late Roman silver coins of these denominations were of a high silver content (over 90%), well above the requirements of the Treasure Act.
