I Małopolskie Dni Dziedzictwa Kulturowego, 15-26 września 1999 r. Kościół oo. Bernardynów w Alwerni nosi wezwanie Stygmatów św. Franciszka z Asyżu. Został założony na wzór włoskiej pustelni La Verna w Toskanii, gdzie w 1224 r. św. Franciszek otrzymał dar stygmatów. Podróżujący po Europie na przełomie XVI i XVII w. królewski sekretarz Krzysztof Koryciński herbu Topór, odwiedził w czasie jednej ze swych podróży tę franciszkańską pustelnię i postanowił założyć w Polsce podobną. Po powrocie do kraju ufundował w swoich dobrach kościół i klasztor. W pobliżu wsi Poręba Żegoty, na wzgórzu zwanym Podskale i przypominającym krajobraz włoskiej pustelni powstał w 1616 r. drewniany kościół. Przybyli doń bernardyni sprowadzeni przez Korycińskiego z Krakowa. Niedługo potem wzniesiono barokowy murowany kościół (1630-1676) oraz klasztor (1625-1656). Po śmierci Krzysztofa Korycińskiego budowę kontynuował jego syn Jan Stanisław, a później kolejni właściciele Poręby Żegoty, zwłaszcza kasztelan wojnicki Franciszek Szwarcenberg-Czerny i rodzina Szembeków. Na początku XVIII w. dobudowano do kościoła kaplicę, w której znajduje się obraz Ecce Homo. Pod koniec XIX w. wzniesiono przy ścianie zachodniej wysoką wieżę oraz rozbudowano klasztor.
