Summary
| Description | Suffolk, VA, August 2011. Peat soil burns like hot coals deep into the gound at the Lateral West Fire on Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. The carbon-rich soil was formed form hundreds of years accumulation of plant material. Fires in peat will continue to smolder and produce smoke unless they are saturated with water.
