Summary
DescriptionUlexite (Kern County, California, USA).jpg |
English: A mineral is a naturally-occurring, solid, inorganic, crystalline substance having a fairly definite chemical composition and having fairly definite physical properties. At its simplest, a mineral is a naturally-occurring solid chemical. Currently, there are over 5900 named and described minerals - about 200 of them are common and about 20 of them are very common. Mineral classification is based on anion chemistry. Major categories of minerals are: elements, sulfides, oxides, halides, carbonates, sulfates, phosphates, and silicates.
Ulexite is a rare borate mineral that forms in some arid lacustrine and desert salt flat environments. Its formula is NaCaB5O6(OH)6·5H2O - hydrous sodium calcium hydroxy-borate. It often forms compact, fibrous masses. When cut perpendicular to the fibers and then polished, pieces of ulexite display fiber-optic properties. In this photo, the background text is not visible because the mineral specimen is transparent; instead, the image has been lifted to the top surface. Such pieces are nicknamed "TV rock". Ulexite has a nonmetallic luster, a clearish to whitish color (impure specimens that have inclusions of fine-grained sediments are mottled grayish), a white streak, and is moderately soft - 2.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale. Locality: unrecorded / undisclosed site in Kern County, southern California, USA Photo gallery of ulexite: www.mindat.org/gallery.php?min=4085 |
