From Pre-Germanic *gʷérh₂nus, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷréh₂wō (heavy stone), from *gʷréh₂us (heavy). Cognate with Lithuanian girna (grindstone, millstone), Russian жёрнов (žórnov, grindstone, millstone), Old Irish bró (millstone, handmill).
