Etymology

Probably from Proto-Indo-European *matn-, *mat- (hoe, pickaxe). Cognate with Latin mateola (implement for digging in the soil), Russian моты́га (motýga, hoe, mattock), Lithuanian matikkas (mattock), Sanskrit मत्य (matyà, harrow, roller, club).
